Description - Trees, to 30 m tall. Bark thick, fissured, the inner bark red. Leaf blades usually elliptic, infrequently oblong, 7-11 x 2.5-5 cm, glabrous, without punctae, coriaceous, smooth and shiny adaxially, dull abaxially, with 8-12 pairs of lateral veins, all orders of venation salient abaxially, only midrib salient adaxially; apex acute to bluntly acuminate; base obtuse to rounded; margins entire, with scars left by caducous hairs; petiole 12-20 mm long. Inflorescences terminal, racemose, the rachis straight, glabrous, drying black, without lenticels, 3-6 cm long, the pedicel bases remaining as short knobs ca. 0.5 mm long after flowers fall, the pedicels 12-18 mm long above articulation, subtended by persistent bract and two persistent bracteoles, the bracts and braceteoles congested, glabrous, oblong, 5-8 mm long. Flowers, 2.5-3 cm diam.; calyx with six lobes, the lobes very widely ovate, 4-5.5 x 4-5 mm, ascending, not or scarcely imbricate, slightly convex abaxially, slightly concave adaxially; petals six, 17-22 x 14-16 mm, white or yellow, sometimes cream-colored; hood of androecium 13 x 15 mm, with double coil, yellow; staminal ring asymmetric, extending up ligule, with 290-350 stamens, the filaments clavate; hypanthium glabrous, gradually tapered into pedicel; ovary 2-locular, with 6-10 ovules attached to basal placenta, the summit umbonate, the style obconical, ca. 1.5 mm long. Fruits cup-shaped to turbinate, the calycine ring inserted above middle, the supracalycine zone erect or slightly inclined inward, the infracalycine zone tapered into woody pedicel, asymmetric at base, 2-3 (excluding pedicel and operculum) x 2-4 cm. Seeds unknown.

A canopy tree of non-flooded forest known only from central Amazonia in the vicinity of Manaus. It flowers in Sep and Oct.
