Distribution (from PLANTAE): This family is of cosmopolitan distribution. Nearly half of the species belong to the large, mainly herbaceous genus Viola which is best developed in North Temperate regions and in tropical mountains. At the other extreme is the pantropical woody genus Rinorea with nearly three hundred species commonly found in the understory of rainforests.
