Taxonomic notes (from PLANTAE): Although its limits are well defined, the family is notoriously difficult to subdivide. The problem is compounded by the fact that most workers concentrate on either neotropical or paleotropical groups and rarely work on the family as a whole.
Distribution (from PLANTAE): This family is well developed in both the Old and New World tropics, particularly the paleotropics. Asimina (ca 10 spp.) is a notable exception, centering in southeastern United States and extending as far north as New York and Michigan.
