Description
Description Author and Date: Frank Almeda, based on Almeda, F. (2009). Melastomataceae. In: G. Davidse, M. Sousa-Sânchez, S. Knapp, & F. Chiang (eds.), Flora Mesoamericana: Cucurbitaceae a Polemoniaceae. 4(1): 164-338.
Taxonomy and Systematics: A poorly understood variable species complex of southern Central America, is recognized by its 4-celled cuneate anthers and capitate stigmas. Cogniaux divided this species into six varieties based largely on differences in the size and dentition of leaf blades and details of the indument. The Costa Rican material used here for the description of floral details appears to differ from the Nicaraguan material in its shortly 3-5-plinerved leaf blades and furfuraceous puberulence on branchlets, abaxial leaf surfaces, and inflorescences. In addition to the three varieties treated here, one other distinct population is known from Volcan Mombacho, Nicaragua and other mountain tops in Costa Rica and Panama. Plants from these populations are glabrous and the obscurely serrulate subentire leaf blades are somewhat shorter (4.5-8.3 cm) than typical for the species. Additional study is needed to properly evaluate the taxonomic status of these populations.
Notes: [Description based only on Mesoamerican specimens.]
