Description: Shrub or small tree 3-7 m tall with quadrisulcate prominently winged upper cauline internodes, essentially glabrous throughout. Leaves of a pair ± equal to somewhat unequal in size on winged petioles 2.5-3 cm long that are fused basally to form an interpetiolar nodal wing that becomes a prominent expanded ridge when leaf blades fall away. Leaves 3-5-plinerved with the innermost pair of primary veins diverging from the midvein 1-1.5 cm above the blade base, oblong-elliptic, 14-22 x 5.2-8 cm, apex short caudate-acuminate, base inconspicuously subauriculate, the margin entire. Inflorescence a multiflowered panicle 8-15 cm long; flowers 5-merous, sessile or on pedicels 0.5 mm long; the persistent bracteoles triangular-ovate, 0.5 x 0.5 mm. Calyx tube 0.5–0.75 mm long, the calyx lobes broadly rounded to semicircular, 0.5 x 1.5 mm, minutely ciliolate and exceeding the callose-triangular exterior calyx teeth that are 0.25 mm long. Petals obovate-oblong, 6-7 x 3-4 mm, pinkish-purple, glabrous. Anthers isomorphic, 4-4.5 mm long, pink, linear-subulate and conspicuously arcuate with a dorsally inclined apical pore, connective neither prolonged nor appendaged at the base. Style glabrous, 3.5 mm long; stigma capitellate; ovary 3-locular, 2/3 inferior, apex glabrous or sparingly and deciduously glandular-puberulent, somewhat truncate at anthesis, becoming ± rounded in fruit; berry 4-5 x 4-5 mm, purple at maturity. Seeds ovoid, the testa foveolate, 0.75-1 mm long.
Habitat and Distribution: Local and uncommon in rainforest margins. 600-1500 m. Colombia. COSTA RICA (Morales et al. 5053, CAS).
Taxonomy and Systematics: This species is part of the complex of closely related species discussed briefly under M. reducens.
