    Description: Shrubs 1-4 m tall, the uppermost branchlet nodes and internodes glabrous, the adaxial petiolar surface glabrous except for an inconspicuous patch of spreading or curved hairs at the petiole/laminar junction. Leves 3-5-nerved, elliptic-lanceolate to elliptic-ovate, 12-24 X 3-8 cm, glabrous throughout and bright red-purple beneath, apex acute to acuminate, base acute to rounded, the margin ciliate-serrulate; petioles 1-6 cm long. Panicle 6-12 cm long, the 5-merous flowers sessile and secund on the widely spreading branches, the persistent bracteoles rounded-triangular and entire, 0.5-1 mm long. Hypanthia glabrous; calyx ca. 0.5 mm long from the torus, truncate or with 5 obscure shallowly undulate glabrous lobes, exterior teeth not developed. Petals glabrous, oblong-obovate, 2.5-3 X 1-1.5 mm. Stamens isomorphic; anthers oblong, purple, 1.5-1.7 mm long with a ventrally inclined pore; connective neither prolonged nor appendaged. Style glabrous, 2 mm long; stigma not expanded; ovary 4-locular, 5/6 inferior, apex obscurely glandular-puberulent; berry 3-4 X 4-6 mm, blue-black at maturity. Seeds ovoid, rounded and obscurely rugulate, 0.5 mm long.

    Habitat and Distribution: Local and uncommon, rain forest. 60-1000 m. Southern Mexico (Oaxaca & Veracruz), Colombia.
