    Type: Brazil. Rio de Janeiro. Glaziou 16967 (lectotype designed by Mayara K. Caddah, 2013: BR [barcode 521242], isolectotypes: BR, C, F-fragment, G-2 sheets, K, R-3 sheets, Z).

    Description: Trees up to 18 m tall; young branches rounded and slightly flattened, with or without interpetiolar ridges, densely covered by rough, ferruginoues, dendritic trichomes of short arms. Leaves discolorous; petioles (0.5) 2-7 cm; blades 19-30 x 8-20 cm, elliptic, ovate-elliptic or lanceolate, apex acute to shortly acuminate, base acute to rounded, margin entire, chartacecous, longitudinal nerves 3, with an additional, faint, marginal pair, basal or up to 0.5 mm above the base, abaxial surface moderately to densely covered by ferruginous dendritic trichomes of long arms on the blade, ca. 0.3 mm diam., of short arms on the veins, ca. 0.1 mm diam. Panicles (3)5-11 x (3)4-7 cm, glomerulate, terminal, densely covered by rough, ferruginous, dendritic trichomes of short arms; bracts and bracteoles lanceolate to triangular, up to 4.4 mm long, caducous. Flowers (7)8(10)-merous. Hypanthium 2.8-4.8 mm long, campanulate, inner surface glabrous or with sparse glandular trichomes, outer densely covered by ferruginous, dendritic trichomes of short arms; torus glabrous or with sparse glandular trichomes. Calyx lobate, caducous in fruit, inner surface glabrous or sparsely covered by simple trichomes, outer surfaces densely covered by trichomes similar to the ones on the hypanthium; tube 1.5 mm long, inner lobes 0.2 mm long, triangular, outer teeth subulate. Petals 6.2-7 x 1.7-2.3 mm. Stamens yellow, slightly dimorphic; filaments 5.3-6 mm long, glabrous; connectives not prolonged below the thecae, unappendaged; anthers 3.6-4.1 mm long, oblong, bilobed at base, with a single terminal, ventrally displaced, moderate pore, ca. 0.2 mm diam. Ovary 1.6-2 mm long, 2/3 adherent to the hypanthium, 3-4-locular, apex glabrous; style 6.7-7 mm long, straight, punctiform, glabrous. Fruits up to 11 x 11.7 mm, brown, several minute seeds.

    Habitat and Distribution: Miconia octopetala occurs in the montane forests from the states of Rio de Janeiro to Bahia, from 650 to 1250m asl. There are doubtfull records from Minas Gerais and São Paulo states.
