CORRECTION OF ALGAL BINOMIAL

In making the combination Pterosiphoma clevelandii, I erroneously believed that the
variety clevelandii Farlow (1877) was validly published. This is not the case* hence
necessitating a new name and a valid description. As previously stated* No. 183 of the
Farlow, Anderson and Eaton exsiccatae (in the Farlow Herbarium, Harvard University)
is the lectotype, This specimen is photographed (Hollenberg 1970, fig, zo) and a
portion of it illustrated (Hollenberg 1970, fig. 1j) in detail, showing recurved ultimate
branehleis, diagnostic for the species.

Thalli erect, 2-3 cm tall., dark red, from, prostrate branches; erect branches with mostly
3 orders of branching; main axes per current, compressed, 300-350 um broad, the
segments about V* as long as broad, bearing distichous lateral branches at intervals of
2 segments; ultimate branchless strongly recurved, 200*250 ¿cm long, at intervals of 2
segments; pericentral cells 10-12, unconkated; reproduction unknown.

Thalli erecti, 2-3 cm alt., fusco-rubri, a ramis prostratis enascentes; rami erecti
plerumque ad 3 ordines ramificanonis ramosi; axes principal«® percurrentes compressique;
300-350 lim lat,* segments ca dimidio brevioribus quam lati; ramos laterales distiehos
inter vallis 2 segmentorum f«rentes; ramuli ultimi, inter vail is 2 segmentorum, valde
recurvati, 200-250 um long,., celiulae pericentrales 1.0-12, non eomcatae; reproductio
ignota.
