Main vegetation types of region: (l^chapada11, decid-
uous to evergreen xeroaorphic tree woodland ("cerre-
dao") on tops & sides of ssndstone plateaus 6 sobs
low flat land; (2)"tabulairo", deciduous low-tree
woodland (another type of "cerradao") on upper parts
of rolling terrains (3)"Bata*, closed, deciduous to
evergreen forest, in galleriesf (4) "caatinga", open
deciduous forest on lower parts of rolling terrain;
(5)*varjao*, scattered deciduous forest-type trees
on low flat land; (6) "cocal*, danse babagu palm
groves on Pamafba River terrace & soma brook val-
leys. Dry season 4-5 months with almost no rain;
brooks intermittent. Annual fires & cattle grasing
in all areas. Some spots with dense secondary cha-
pada scrub ("carrasco"); much tabuleiro cleared^to
form grassy pasture; mach mata, caatinga & varjao
in shifting cultivation»

Fern on trunk of *taaja" palm in a grove of those
palms. In deep shsde. ("Naja" palm groves border
buriti palm groves, the letter appearing harm in
swampy ground where subterranean water comes to
surface«)
