7. Ectocarpus aeuminatus, sp, nov. Saunders. Proc. Calif. Acad. Sci. Hi; Bot. TTTT4V.' "pi. 14, Figs. 1-5. 1898 Plant minute; creeping filaments forming a* compact net" work; erect filaments simple, of the same size from base to apex, a mm. or so high; cells not at all constricted, 12-14u broad, be- low as long as the diameter, above 2-3-5 times as long; chroma- tophores elliptical, much more abundant in the central part of the filament; plurilocular sporangia sessile on the base of the erect filaments orarising on a long or short stalk from the creeping fil- aments, lanceolate, very long-acuminate, sometimes tipped with a short hair, often more or less curved, 90-300u (rarely 400u) x 20- 30u. Forms minute, light brown tufts in the conceptacles of Cystoseira osmundacea. Pacific Grove, California, July, 1896; San Pedro, California, Aug., 1896. The creeping filaments ramify through between the para- physes and attach themselves to the inner wall of the conceptacle; the erect filaments extend out of the mouth of the conceptacle a mm. or so; the plurilocular sporangia point toward the opening or extend just out of it. Acad., 3d series, Vol. I, p. 149, PI. XIV, figs. 1-5, 1898. Forming minute light brown tufts on the conceptacles of Cysto- seira osmundacea, often associated with E. cylindraceus. Pacific Grove, California, August, 1896. De A. SAUNDERS. With plurilocular sporangia. NEW YORK BOTANICAL GARDEN 0 0887755 i • ^27. Ectocarpus aeuminatus Saunders Fronds diminutive, attached by a network of delicate rhizoidal filaments; erect filaments uniform in size throughout, 1-2 mm. long; cells cylindrical, not constricted, 12-14n diam., quadrate below, 2-5 times as long above; chromatophores irregular or elliptical disks, more abundant in the central part of the filament than elsewhere; zoo- sporangia unknown; gametangia sessile on the creeping filaments or on the base of the erect filaments or terminal on short filaments arising directly from the creeping filaments, very long-acuminate, sometimes tipped with a short hair, often more or less curved, 90-300/x long, 20-30/x broad. Growing within the conceptacles of Cystoseira osmundacea and Halidrys dioica. Central California (Pacific Grove) to southern California (San Pedro). Saunders, Phyc. Mem., 1898, p. 149, pi. 14, figs. 1-5; Collins, Holden and Setchell, Phyc. Bor.-Amer. (Exsicc.), nos. 524 and 2142. The shape of the gametangia would seem to ally this very incon- spicuous species most closely with E. stticulosus, but the chromato- phores are described by Saunders as elliptical. We have only dried material for examination and cannot, therefore, add anything to the description by Saunders. It is a very curious and seemingly distinct species. Its habitat, within the conceptacles of members of the Fucaceae, seems to have reduced it almost to the state of parasitism, at least one-half of the plant being unable to function in food making. 00887755
