Forming a thin stratum, more or less continuous, on Ruppia maritima. In pools in a salt marsh, West Berkeley, California. Type no. 1423, Gardner. Anabaena variabilis Collins, Holden and Setchell, Phyc. Bor.-Amer. (Sxsicc.), no. 1209. Anabaena propinqua appears to be closely related to A. variabilis Kuetz., but comparison with authentic mater- ial of that species, from the herbarium of Thuret contri- buted by Dr. Bornet (Herb. Univ. Calif, no. 100300) shows sufficient differences to warrant the establishment of a new species to receive our plant. It differs from A, varia bilis Kuetz. in the smaller dimensions of all parts of the plant, vegetative cells, heterocysts and spores, which are also more nearly spherical than in A, variabilis and have hyaline walls instead of brown as in that species. . deJJ, fUJii. lio£, Ì "6%^ V a 6 7 8 9 10 T KT V The New York copyright reserved Botanical Garden - C.H-c<aYlog> ( SeTUtcul is XSOTYPE OF: \&cmA»6* I /W&A<na ^vKPi'n^oa l Ot+\\f. ?v>&L.-&or. fc-.TO.WW. _dcfoHZTO . ^¿9 Zoo'}. q; cc! < o; cr O >- N- LO 00 N CO CD O O Herbarium of the University of California ALG^ OF NEW YORK.
