Brazil. Maranhão. Lorêto Mun. "Ilha de Balsas" region, between the Rivers Balsas & Parnaíba. Ca. 5 km north of main house of Fazenda "Morros", about 30 km south of Lorêto. "Morro do Baile, one of a series of steepsided peaks about 50 m. tall from base, called "Morros do Caldeirao".

Habitat
Grass in scattered clumps in thin sand among outcropping sandstone rocks on top of this morro. In open with scattered shrubs. Scattered over rolling "tabuleiro" -"caatinga" land.

Main vegetation types of region: (1) “chapada”, a semi-closed tree woodland (or W&o”) on flat tops & steep sides of plateaus, on atscp Mlty !>?<, and on areas of rolling or flat dry land; (2) “tabuleiro”, a semi-closed woodland, or “cerrad&o”, of different physiognomy & species composition, on tops of hilly or gently rolling land; (3) “xnata”, a closed tropical forest of many tree species, usually with, palms, in flat stream valleys and In or alongside of brook ravines & courses; (4) “caatinga”, a semi-open forest of few forest tree species on low moist flat land and In narrow vaUeys between “tabuleiro”-covered hills; (5) “var- J&o”, low moist flat land with scattered forest trees of one or a few species; (6) “cocal”, thick groves of baba$u palm on flat river plain of Rio Pamaiba and some of its tributary streams>f JJlWvegetatlon types completely deciduous during dry season.
