Anacystis minutissima sp. nov.

Plate 5, figure 46

Colonies spherical to somewhat irregular in outline, 15-25 m
(up to 45 m) diam.; cells densely crojwded together, 0.8-L2 n
diam., pale aeruginous, often tinged with yellow; tegument thin,
homogeneous, close-fitting, hyaline.

Growing in association with other Myxophyceae among moss
on a water pipe near a stream, Maricao, no. 1194 a, type; on tree
trunks, Coamo Springs, no. 300 d; on a wall at a bridge in Ca-
guas, vo. 462; on broken rock about seven kilometers east of
Coamo, no. 1869 e; on a wall at Hot Springs, no. 402 b; in the
overflow from a hot opening, Coamo Springs, no. 402 b; on a
brick wail near Juan Martin, Fajardo, no. 732 a; in the overflow
from a hot spring, Coamo Springs, no. 367 e.

The specimens of this species of Anacystis are almost per-
fect spheres when young, and for the most part retain the
shape to maturity. Apparently the resting spores merely de-
velop a very thin, smooth wall at maturity. The species seems
closely related to A. firm« (Breb. & Lenorm.) Schmidle, but does
not form the firm, mucous stratum characteristic of that species.
There is also much less variation in the size of the cells.
