Habitat
High elevation, open freshwater bog. Soil black, inundated with water, open canopy. Vegetation dominated by reeds, sedges, ferns with scattered Melastoma sp. individuals.

Description
Reed to 1.5 m. Major component of bog vegetation with sedges, Lycopodium, ferns. At tips of stems, covered by brown "scales". No leaves green, photosynthetic stems.
