Dominican Republic. Pedernales. South slope of Sierra de Baoruco. Along road paralleling the Haitian border, between Pedernales and El Aguacate, 4.5 km above Los Arroyos.

Habitat
Humid forest below the Pinus zone. Other than Rubus, this is the only spiny species in this habitat.

Description
Shrub, this one the largest seen, 5 m tall, 3 cm. in diameter. All stems highly armed except for some of the ultimate leafy stems. Leaves green above, whitened below. Only one open flower per twig and not conspicuous; corolla purple, reflexed; anthers yellow. Fruit hanging, green with purple, turning dull orangish brown, like S. carolinense, but only a few seen. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
