  • Georeferencing Method

    Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. Georeferenced to 29 km (average of 28 and 30 km) along the road which connects the city of Uruçuca to the area known as "Serra Grande", BA-653, in Mun. Uruçuca, Bahia. Using a paper map of the area ("Salvador" [map]. 1:1,000,000. In: Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia. Departamento de Cartografia (Firm). International Chart Of The World On The Millionth Scale: Brazil. Rio de Janeiro: 1972. page 32.), found the general location of Serra Grande. Using Google Maps - Satellite View, located the city of Uruçuca, and the road leading in the direction of Serra Grande, BA-653. Beginning at the point along BA-653 closest to the approximate geographic center of the city of Uruçuca (-14.5886504 -39.2817235), used Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) to measure approximately 29 km (29.0002 km) along BA-653 towards Serra Grande. Using Canadensys Lat/Long Crosshairs, found coordinates for the offset. Using Distance Measurement Tool (Google Maps) again, found the linear extent of the starting location of the offset, the city of Uruçuca, by measuring from the selected starting coordinates near the center of the city to the farthest extent of the city. Input coordinates, linear extent (1.54150 km), measurement error (0.0005 km), and distance precision (1 km), into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to the Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Offset: offset along a path). Note: an additional 1 km was added to the uncertainty output from the MaNIS calculator to account for the 1 km difference between the distance ranges provided on the label and the average distance used for measuring the offset.
