Habitat
Campo cerrado (a type of scrubby woodland originally) on upland, or very rarely forest. Open marsh or dense secondary forest ("mata") along the streams. This habitat: wet ground along stream forming west boundary of fazenda.

Description
In clumps of 20 cm. diam. Plant to 2 m. tall. Spikes light reddish-purple. Phenology of specimen: Fertile.
