Dear Dale:
Your letter of September 28th reached here this morning, with the
enclosed specimen from Devon Island (7013). It is Polytrichum algidum Hag.
& C. Jens., apparently. We have a kleptotype that Dr Steere obtained, I
think from Hagen*s herbarium. Polytrichum inconstans Hag. is probably the
same thing. They have the lamellae of Polytrichum swartzii, but have entire
By an odd coincidence, Zen Iwatsuki and I were just yesterday looking
at a specimen of this taxon that he and Steere collected in Alaska this
summer. At first, I called it Polytrichum yukonense, on account of the
entire leaves, but rechecking the isotype of yukonense here, the lamellae
turn out to have marginal cells of the usual commune type, quite uniform
and distinctly notched. .	._____________
Thank you for letting us keep, the specimen.
