Habitat
Margins of shallow mill pond, evidently silted up and only about 30 cm deep in most places but the water very clear, the slopes fairly steep with a thin margin of shrubs and some trees. dominated by Alnus serrulata, Viburnum, Lyonia, Cornus florida, Rosa palustris, Betula lenta, some Euonymus alatus and Photinia villosa present, the herbaceous layer with Clematis virginiana, Carex stricta extending into the water.

Shrub. several stems; bark grey, smooth with prominent lenticels. Phenology of specimen: Fruit.
