I have just gotten around to examining that Lantana specimen which you
sent me for identification many months agh — ^egener 11,25p.	This seems to
be the ordinary Lantana Camara L» - I can. see no spines or prickles on its stem,
although you sent only the apex of a branch and maybe farther down there were
spines. The variety aculeata (L.) Moldenke [maintained as a distinct species by
Linnaeus, Britton, and others] differs chiefly in having spiny stems, although there
are said to be differences in the color of the corollas, too. Corolla color, of
course, can never be told on dried herbarium specimens, so the herbarium worker must
rely on the presence or absence of spines to determine if a given specimen is of the
typical form of the species or of variety aculeata. At best, the several named
varieties of this species are not very constant or distinct. They intergrade a lot
and probably hybridize —yet they are useful in separating the extremes.
With kindest regards and best wishes, I am, as ever,
Very sincerely yours,v
