T ANT ANAS are common in garden culture in warm temperate conn- *-J tries, and in colder ones are often cultivated in hot houses. Several forms, of the common lantana are recognised. /Two red flowéring varie- ties have been described—namely, Yar. crocea and Yar. sanguinea. These are fery close, distinctions given by L/ H. Bailey in “The Standard Encyclopaedia of Horticulture,1 ? being as follows ! * Yar. crocea—Flowers opening sulphur yellow and changing to saffron. Yar. sanguinea—Flowers opening saffron yellow and changing to bright red. , , The former, I think, is . thé common bright flowering lantana naturalised in Queensland, thé hitter being common in garden culture, and probably run out in one or two localities. The typical form, which is by far the more abundant, has flowers of a much paler hue, opening pale cream with a dark yellow centre, and dying off lilae or purple. There has been quite a good deal of experimental work Carried out with feeding tests on the different varieties. - In Southern Queensland and in coastal New South Wales the red flowering forms have been found more toxic, but in experiments carried out at the Animal Health Station, Oonoonbah, near Townsville, the common or purplish flowering variety has been found the more toxic, red flowering forms being more or less innocuous. LANTANA (LANTANA CAMARA). Description. A rambling shrub, stems 4-angled, the angles bearing short, some- what recurved prickles. Leaves opposite, bright green above, paler beneath, averaging 2£ in. long and 1£ in. wide, but variable as to size, on short stalks about i in., subcordate, rather pointed at fEer apex, scabrid (rough to the touch) above, the veins and veinlets clothed with white, rather soft hairs beneath, margins serrate-creuate. ...Flowers in heads of about three flowers, about .1 in. across, on stalks about as long as the leaves, opening pale-cream with a dark-yellow centre, dying off lilac or purplish. Fruit fleshy,-purplish-black When ripe,-ovoid, about ^ in. long, borne on the floral receptacle which becomes elongated, thickened and somewhat fleshy. : ', Distribution. - A native of tropical America, now widely distributed as a weed over. the tropical and sub-tropical portions of* the world. Poisonous Properties. The poisonous principle of lantana is not known. It is probably an ethereal oil. 300 . : I 18-4-35 Lantana Camara L* Verified by H. N.
