The original speoies, Torreya taxifolia, is confined to a small area near Apalachicola, Florida? The tree was first made known to bot- anists by Groom in 1835, and the specimen is a part of his original cellaction. The label in the lefthand oorner reads, in Torrey*s script, Podoearpus taxifolia? KLorida near Talahassee. Mr* Broom* 1888. We can imagine the pride with which he later wrote in a bolder hand the leg- end in the right hand corner*
