foot thick, terete, 5o feet high or higher, branched at the
top only; wood reddish or dark brown toward the hollow center,
sapwood whitish, moderately soft, odorless and tasteless;
bark whitish, smooth or lentioelled, reddish beneath the
epidemia; branches coarse, rebranched, spreading and forming
a flat crown or nearly so; twigs saberect; leaves coriaceous,
chiefly horizontal, nearly flat, with tips somewhat recurved,
very dark green above, paler beneath, midvein yellowish green
beneath; fruits solitary, axillary or along the branchiate,
hanging, upon 1 fz inch long stout pedicels, £ inches long at
least, obovoidly ellipsoid, yellowish red with white mealy
meat, 4-sceded; the flattened stone-like seeds with a felt-
like deep cardinal red integument, and hanging from the apex
