A perennial herb up to 10ft® tall,
growing in a dense clump, the leaves
at the base sheathing and a rich purp-
le-brown, glabrous throughout, stems
3-angular, the upper part of the leaves
deeply channelled, the margins finely
saw-toothed, bright green above pale g
grey-green below, spikelets green turning
pale brown very clustered in a compound
umbel at the apex of a stout peduncle,
3-angular, 6ft. high. Local with Cype-
rus articulatus-Phragmites mauritianus
as an inner fringe to regenerating Pop-
ulus ilicifolius on the banks of the
river.
