A European and Asiatic species closely related to the above
is believed to have formed the Manna of the Egyptians in the
wilderness. It grows loosely attached on mountain sides; heavy
winds carry large masses of it int.© the valleys below where th
the ignorant and hungry peasant looks upon it as bread rained
from heaven. Various travellers in Egypt, Algeria and western
Asia have reported such*rains of manna* . The Khirghez Tartars
frequently eat it as a substitute ior bread*
