Inclosed I am re teaming' the specimen you sent. I can-
not make it anything else hut Castanopsis cuspidata (Xhhg. J Schott-
ky, though in that species the acorn is normally entirely covered
by the cupula, but we have at least one specimen (from Quelpaert,
Korea,) which agrees in the partly exposed acorn with your Califor-
nian specimen. The species is occasionally planted in the south-
