in very moist ravines.

Description
Tree 40 feet high; stems more or less ridged, 1½ foot thick, branched from the middle: main branches erect, the ultimate ones flexible, and more or less drooping; leaves horizontally spreading, chartaceous, the thick upwardly curved petiole greenish gray, flat, deep green and blotched with gray on the upper side, yellowish so beneath; inflorescence mostly terminal or upon leafless twigs, ascending, the panicle 6 to 12 inches long; the stalks and calyx yellowish green; the thine reflexed petals whitish; the erect filaments and anthers similarly light yellow; pistil yellowish white; bark quite thick, brown and thinly checked on the outside when old, smooth on the branches; wood light, soft, white, odorless and tasteless.
