Gardé**,
Teinostachyum attenuatum (Thw.) Munro
SRI LANKA: Uva Province: Nuwara Eliya District: Haputala
Range: forests near Ohiya. Abundant on steep slopes in
shaded woods above stream. Loose, small clumps of 5 or 6
culms, these 3-4 m long, the largest 2 cm in diam., weak.
New culm leaves maroon, floccose: sheaths stramineous,
pushed away by the expanding branches; blade horizontal.
Branching intravaginal, the small branches not breaking
through the sheath at the base: central dominant branch
grows quickly, becoming whiplike, extending out over other
vegetation, often rebranching; subsidiary buds developing
almost at the same time with 2 or 3 major branches at the
node often becoming long and whiplike themselves.
