Spiranthes lacera (Raf.) Raf.

Lake Sugema Wildlife Management Area is about 4 miles southwest of the
intersection of State Highway 1 and County Road J40 in Keosauqua. It is
owned by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. An approximately 2
acre old field (former crop ground) occurs northwest of the wildlife unit
headquarters and west of Iowa Oak Grove Avenue. This site is on the
Southern Iowa Drift Plain.
There are at least 258 genets of Spiranthes lacera in the old field. Most of the
genets are blooming. The petals and sepals are white, while the lips are white
with a green center. The collection comes from the southeast portion of the old
field. Spiranthes lacera is associated with Andropoaon qerardii. Andropoaon
virainicus. Antenriaria neolecta. Chamaecrista fasciculata. Euphorbia corollata.
Euthamia oraminifolia. Potentilla simplex and Silphium laciniatum. Another 31
genets of Spiranthes lacera occur in an old field north of the above site and
south of a Eurasian hayfield.
