Dear Professor Yuncker,
Amongst my Tongan specimens of Piperaceae, I have
found one plant of tlie genus Piper which I am not able to identify.
It has been collected on the island-- of Taf ahi "by the native chief
and given to me with the indication )that it was an important ingredient
for r,Tongan oil” and that the vines eould reach 15 m of length.
The name given-. Jo me was "fue** which is, of‘course, a common name
for any creepers. Is it perhaps a species more frequent in Samoa
or Fiji? Maybe it can be considered.as a native introduction in
view of the use of the plant.
I should be- very grateful to you, if you could identify
the specimen for me. As I have kept .a duplicate for me, you may keep
the plant enclosed, together with thè label. Within a few months,
I shall send you the rest of duplicates which I have spared for you,
as soon as I get the identifications from the specialists where I have
sent them. By the way,' can you give me the address of Dr. Corner who
identified your Ficus specimens?: . I have still some mysterious samples
of this genus, tool
With kindest personal regards,’ |
Yours sincerely,
à
