Spikes sessile, -tightly packed into capitate cluster - but distinguishable without dissection. 3 lower spikes female, terminal spike gynecandrous. Leaves wide, 3-4mm, slightly folded with keeled midvein. Scales dark purple-black, < perigynia. Scales acute-tipped with midvein.
