Piperaceae Piper tuberculatum Jacq.
det. M. Nee, 1999
Depto. Santa Cruz, Prov. Andrés Ibáñez, 2-3 km. by dirt
road SE of Santiago El Tomo. Subtropical deciduous forest
of Anadenanthera macrocarpa, Cnidoscolus basiacanthus,
Astronium, on highly dissected terrain (max. elev. ca. 750
m.) on unconsolidated reddish sandy silt. Mostly deciduous
now, but some trees sprouting new leaves at end of dry
season. Much being cleared for cattle pasture and
plantations of Citrus and other fruit crops. Some Attalea
speciosa, especially in the valley bottoms.
18°0rS, 63°22’W. alt. 650-675 m.
Small tree 6 m. tall, 10 cm. in diameter. Leaves small,
mostly seem to be emerging now. Spikes erect, yellowish or
yellowish white in flower, yellow-green in fruit. The only
other Piperaceae seen here is P. amalago, but it seems
sterile at this time. Piper aduncum is nearby along road in
main valley bottom.
