  • Georeferencing Method

Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Version 2012. From the locality description alone this site is very ambiguous due to the large offset distance and lack of supplemental information guiding the offset description (by road vs. by a heading). However, other collections by this collector which bracket this collection numerically on both sides (NY Catalogue IRNs: 401802, 677791, etc.) include supplemental information in the locality string (in addition to: "Ca. 50 km W. of Laranjeiras do Sul.") which place all of these collections in the general if not in the immediate vicinity of the town called Quedas do Iguaçu (also appears as Campo Novo), which is found at almost exactly 50 W of Laranjeiras do Sul. Therefore, georeferenced to the approximate geographic center of the town of Quedas do Iguaçu, in Mun. Quedas do Iguaçu, Parana. Using Google Maps - Text Search & Satellite View, located all the named places discussed. Using Google Maps - What's Here tool, found coordinates (final) for the approximate geographic center of the town of Quedas do Iguaçu. Because we can only reasonably infer that these collections were made "near" the town of Quedas do Iguaçu (also Campo Novo), estimated linear extent as one would an un-defined area, by using Google Maps - Measure Distance tool to measure from the selected coordinates at the center of the town of Quedas do Iguaçu to the center of the nearest comparable named place, the town of Erval Boniol (also Espigao Alto do Iguacu) (-25.425547, -52.838568), then dividing that distance by 2. Input linear extent (3653.5 m), coordinate precision (0.00001 degrees), datum (WGS84), and measurement error (0.5 m) into the MaNIS Georeferencing Calculator to find the uncertainty radius (according to Georeferencing Quick Reference Guide, Named Place: Near a named place).
