Very common in shade in wet woodland, mostly sap-
lings or small soft-stemmed shrubs occasionally to|
tree size. This specimen about the largest seen—
25 feet tall, base 10 inches. Bark olive gray,
nearly smooth. Leaves to 580 mm. long and 410 mmj
wide, opposite. Catkins to over 2 feet long, Bark
green when large, pale green when small.
