Description
spore length: 20 microns; spore width: 12 microns; spore shape: elliptical, football shaped; spore texture: velvet like; spore color: dark brown to black; spore print color: black. This specimen was initially identified by Jay Justice. The spore print is the black substance on the outer surface that is between the globes created by the globe collapsing on itself. I obtained the spore from such an area on the outer peridium and pressed it between the glass slide and the cover slip. Close examination by Dr. Methven (see annotation above) confirmed that this specimen is Entonaema liquescens. On 7/30/2006 another specimen was collected at Babler State Park in St. Louis Missouri. This was the first time this species was documented in St. Louis.
