Description
spore length: 4.5 microns; spore width: 1.7 microns; spore shape: elliptical to oblong; spore texture: smooth; spore color: clear; spore print color: dark olive brown. This variety is distinguished from Mutinus elegans (elegant stinkhorn) because it is less tapered than elegans. It also has a clear seperation of the spore mass and the stalk. (see Audobon Society - Field Guide to North American Mushrooms - page 835 for Mutinus elegans). Close examination by Dr. Methven (see annotation above) combined with the 2015 DNA analysis confirmed that this specimen is Mutinus caninus.
