In mixed oak, birch, hemlock forest. Cap 9 cm when fully open, with pointed scales. Stipe 10 cm long, base scaly, swollen, rooting 6-7 cm below ground, covered with rings of scales that stain a bit reddish at the the very base. Double ring on stipe. A bit of reddish staining on the scales at the base of the stipe. No noticeable odor. Spores (9.8) 10.1-11.6 (11.7) x (5.6) 5.9 x 7.1 n=28
