    Lavatera arborea L.

La vat era assurgentiflora Kell. Mal va Rosa,
Two single-trunked subglobose shrubs were not-
ed in shade of Monterey cypress on E side of
Lake Merced (near Lake Merced Blvd.), San
Francisco, S. F. Co*, Calif* Reflexed limb
of each petal rose-purple, lined with darker,
becoming whitish basally and on claw (whitish
area, within, heavily flecked with dull pur-
plish). Lvs. dullish green with little gloss,
paler beneath; midribs, petioles, and younger
stems pale yellowish green. On one shrub the
fruit, with seed, dangled from gray-barked
stems (in rather dense raceme-like arrange-
ments) some 6 to 12 in. below this year’s sub-
terminal axillary inflorescence. (Inflores-
cence essentially termimal on smaller plant.)
Main stems gray, rather smooth, 4 to 5 in. in
diaa. at base. Hgt. of larger indiv. 6 ft.
