Forest originally of Quercus, Liquidambar macrophylla, now mostly heavily cut and disturbed and replaced by only Alnus acuminata ssp. arguta, Pteridium aquilinum. Epiphyte. Peduncle bracts bright red, those in upper part green; petals purple; stamens purple with white tip. A common and showy species from at least 1400 m^ to this altitude. Coll.: M. Nee & K.
