Again there seems to be some mixing among the specimens of Pinus
/T / /• - iS§iiOiiS collected by both, Drs. J.M. Bigelow, and C.C. Parry.
Dr. Bigelow’s specimen (of Pinus_insignis in Pac. R. Rep. IV, p.
bets 1*1*10 16-17, and J. Torrey, I.e., p. 141) represents Pji_at tenuat a (as
already redetermined on the sheet and on the label of the cone,
earlier, and by another person) not only as to the botanical
characteristics of the leaves and especially the cone, but also
as to the place of collection, since Pinus_radiata .does not oc-
cur at the site indicated on the label; in fact none of the pla-
ces cited by Dr. Bigelow in. the Pac. R. Report as occurrences of
PiQy§_iSSignis correspond to the geographical range of the true
PJL_r ad iat a. The other cone, a true P^r adi at a, (is it really a
Bigelow-specimen ??, since there is no original label of his at-
tached to the cone !), does not belong to that particular sheet,
since the second specimen on it (actually leaves of a true Pinus
E§diata) was collected by Dr. C.C. Parry on the Mexican Boundary
Survey in 1850, and was enumerated by Dr. Torrey in the "Botany"
to Emory’s Report, p. 209.
