Dryopteris filix-mas(L.) Schott
Rugged forested terrain along the Root River two miles east-northeast of Peterson,
and two miles southwest of Rushford. Very local on the south side of the river one
milft east-southeast of the Highway 16 bridge. Eight vigorous clumps (6-12 fronds
each) encountered on the steep northeast-feeing slopes of a deep ravine cut into the
upper portion of a large sloping sand terrace that extends 260 feet up from the base
of the 480-foot bluffs here. Plants occur in a mesic microsite in an otherwise dry
Quercus velutina - Pinus banksiana woodland. Full shade. Deep medium-textured
sand. Associates include Asplenium platyneuron, Dryopteris carthusiana, Pilea
pumila, Eupatorium rugosum, Circaea lutetiana, Phryma leptostachya.
