SHOSHONE CO: St. Joe National Forest, Bitterroot Mtns.,
North Fork Clearwater Drainage. Monumental Buttes region,
South slope of South Butte along FS road 363 ca. 2 mi w of jet
with FS road 1268, elevation ca. 6100 ft. T42N R5E S2 w xh.
Common shrub to ca 2.2 m tall, foliage strongly fragrant,
flowers white; most of population in fruit. Soil thin, rocky,
derived from belt sediments but with at volcanic ash component.
With Tsuga mertensiana, Abies lasiocarpa, Festuca viridula,
Juncus, Phyllodoce empetriformis, Vacciniumscoparium,Luzula
hitchcockii.
