The site is approximately 1 mile northwest of the town of Ortley. Ortley
Game Production Area, owned by the Department of Game, Fish and Parks.
A very disturbed mesic prairie occurs on a small hill surrounded by marsh
and wet meadow. The soil in the prairie is Renshaw-Sioux loams, 3 to 9
percent slopes (RhB). Renshaw loam is a Udic Haploboroll and formed in
alluvium. It is shallow over sand and gravel. Sioux loam is a Udorthentic
Haploboroll that formed in glacial outwash. It is very shallow over sand and
gravel. The soil in the marsh and wet meadow is Rauville mucky silt loam, 0
to 2 percent slopes (Ra), a calcareous Cumulic Haplaquoll that formed in silty
alluvium washed from adjacent soils. This site is on the Prairie Coteau.
200+ ramets. The ramets were in bud, flower or vegetative. Asclepias
ovalifolia occurred on an east-facing slope of the hill in the disturbed mesic
prairie. It was associated with Galium boreale, Lithospermum canescens,
Poa compressa and Symphoricarpos occidentalis.
