Notes (shown on label)
"These specimens are quite unusual. Koch has indicated that they are H. molle. Grout (1931) in the Moss Fl. N. Amer. 3(2): 93 similarly referred them to H. molle, in spite of the pseudo-arcticum labels. It is my view that they are all very depauperate forms of H. bestii. Small though they are, they all have the usual coarseness of H. bestii and H. smithii. The size would indicate a closer relationship to H. smithii as indicated by a pseudo-arcticum epithet. However, the areolation is longer than that of H. smithii and rather irregular much like H. bestii. The telling point is the length of the marginal leaf cells. They are very long. Infinitely longer than anything normally occuring in H. smithii or H. molle. Both H. molle and H. bestii extend down into the Sierras of California. H. molle is NEVER coarse like these plants. Coarseness is a feature of H. bestii. I therefore determine these plants to be H. bestii. How do you like them apples!" - D. W. Jamieson
