1.	paronychia argyrocoma (Michx.) Nutt. Silver-Whitlow-Wort,
Silver-Ohickweed. Perennial from a tanroot. Branches numerous, tuft-
forming or matted. Stems simple or forked, 5—50 cm. long, retrorsely
silky oubescent. Leaves 1—3 cm» long, flat, or the margins inrolled,
linear or linear-lanceolate, acute, articulate, appressed, silky pubescent
to quite glabrous. Stipules silvery-hyaline, lanceolate, acute, shorter
than the leaves. Flowers in dense cymes, subtended and mostly concealed
by conspicuous silvery bracts. Calyx 3-5—6-0 aim. long, appressed, pubes-

cent, the seoals connate at the base, hooded at the apex and terminated in
a white, flat, more or less hirsute awn, 0.5—1.5 mm. long. Utricle mem-
branous, pubescent at the summit. Seed reddish-brown, essentially smooth
under low magnification.
Subsp. argyrocoma Maguire, "eaves silky pubescent. Oalyx 4.7—
6.0 mm. long*
Subsp. albimontana (Fernald) Maguire, leaves sparingly pubescent
or sometimes glabrous. Oalyx —4.5 mm. long
