255. Chara contraria A. Br. var.
Plants 20-40 cm. in length, clean, graceful, light green, coated with lime;
stems and branches corticated; cortex cells about twice as many as the
leaves in the whorl next above; internodes 15-30 mm. in length; stem
950 980 mic. in diameter; stipular whorl double; spines on the stem
somewhat short; leaves 10-18 mm. in length, 6-10 in a whorl, with 3-4
corticated internodes and generally three naked internodes at upper
end, corticated and uncorticated portions of leaf about equal in length;
end cell of leaf sharply pointed; monoecious; a single oogonium and
antheridium borne at a node; antheridium 280-325 mic. in diameter;
oogonium broadly ovate, 420 mic. in diameter, 630-700 mic. in length,
with 10-12 striae; crown short.and broad, 210 mic. broad at base,
70-80 mic. in height; oosperm nearly spherical, 350-420 mic. long and
wide; two bracts at fertile joint 3 times the length of the oogonium,
the other two 1.5-2 times the length of the oogonium.

brackish.
