Base of S-facing Wisconsin River valley bluff and edge of
com, wheat and soybean field, sandy soil. Open grassy area
dominated by Bromus inermis, pastured decades ago, edge
of young woods of Morus alba, Quercus velutina, Primus
virginiana, Celtis occidentalis, with scattered old open-
grown Quercus macrocarpa.
Foliage and inflorescences more or less normal, but plants
obviously senescent and the growth of wood is very slow.
Loose colony or patch, all shrubs gnarled and stems few-
branched, mostly 2 m. tall, more rarely to 3 m. tall, this
individual with stem 5 cm. in diameter, 15 years old; wood
orangish yellow. Sap milky, sticky. Voucher for wood
specimens at Kw, Lw, MADw, MEXUw, RSAw. Flowers
yellow-green.
