variability within the population, from a mass collection from Gobbler’s Knob, Mt. Rainier
National Park, Wash. (Kern 833). Payson might have given this collection any one of the
following names: a) T. glaucum var peduncvlatum Pays.—some of the peduncles (plant on the
right) are over S cm; b) T. glaucum var hesperium Pays—cauline leaves (plant on the right) are
mostly shorter than the internodes whereas those cauline leaves on the left are ample. The lower
plant has both ample and reduced cauline leaves; c) T. fendleri Gray—according to Payson’s treat-
ment, this species has “stems, up to the inflorescence, rarely over 1 dm long” (plants on the left
and bottom) whereas T. glaucum has “stems, up to the inflorescence, usually over 1 dm long”
(plant on the right).
