POSTAL CODE 2 7 706 DEPARTMENT OF BOTANY 23 July 1974 TELEPHONE 919—684—8111 Dr. A.L. Welden Department of Biology Tulane University New Orleans, La. 70118 Dear Arthur: Alas, I've encountered what I believe to be the sooty mold that you've asked me to look for on melastomes. This is first I've seen of it on Monochaetum so I thought you might be especially interested in it. The species is M. floribundum (Schlecht.) Naud. and the collection data as follows: Almeda & Flowers #2125 --- COSTA RICA« Alajuela Province: 1.5 km beyond the Varablanca inter- section on the road to Volcan Poas. Along pastures and disturbed sites at an elev. of 1880-1900 m. (26 Dec 73) Please find enclosed selected fragments from the original collection. Hope all is well with you and family. Did you ever decide to take the trip to Yucatan? I'm1, keeping quite busy and will be writing full-time in about 3 wks. Good news— I've accepted an appointment in the Dept.of Biology, UCLA beginning Jan, 1975- This will provide an additional impetus to complete the thesis without delay. Best wishes and greetings to the family. _ Sincerely, 02986281 02986281
