Hillebrand pays this species is“ not uncommon on all islands
at altitnd&s of 1000 to 2500 feet, as in Nuuanu, Oahu, near the
Paii.’7^JEf‘ it ever was common' on Oahu, it has become, rather
¿sbarce during the intervening years. My first specimens were
/<3bile$feed at the NuuanU Pali, where there, are several trees,
bnt.|iii«':npt at all common. On Kauai, it is plentiful between
thle Hanapepe and Waimea rivers. Above Waimea, on the edge
of t^iiabular summit, at about 3500 feet elevation it is very
abundant. '"0he stunted tree was observed in the forest on Ka-
hol^amanoa ,at 40,00 feet, Mann’s: statement that the berry is
red; is’much more'correct than Hillebrand’s designation of it as
‘ ‘ yeiloW. ” Red-brown is perhaps the proper term. The grace-*
ful. palm-like faabit of this, tree, is. quite a contrast to the her- ,
baceous liliaceous, plants of more temperate climbs;
